Medals are so iconic and synonymous with the military, we knew we wanted to include them in our game. The idea is to incorporate medals into our card designs and for players to earn medals through strategic movements of their units.
We decided to create the artwork for the medals in Substance Designer. Substance Designer is a texture creation software. It’s popular in the game industry for its procedural and scale-able workflows. For our medals, we created a Medal Generator, which means we can produce infinite permutations with ease. The Generator works by allowing you to first define the number of layers you want, then the shapes for each layer, and finally, the colors and materials to set for each layer. The models are then rendered in Marmoset Toolbag, a rendering software, on a flat plane using displacement, tessellation, and alpha.
